Killing Your Darlings

An interesting post from Brenda Coulter on 'killing your darlings' below:

I'm not sure I could stomach highlighting all the essential text in my novel but it's a technique that could come in useful when editing a short story (e.g. if it's 3,000 words and you need to cut it down to 2,000 for a competition or mag).

Great article. I can see myself doing this when it comes to editing the novel. If I ever get that far!

Interesting. I may try it although it sounds a lot of work but what the h*ll :-)

Good news of the rewrite progress!

This is a great link, Cally, and so topical for me. I have found it really hard to dump my favourite bits (into my cut bits file), bit I feel so liberated now!

I don't know, however, if I could ever be quite as ruthless as she is, but maybe I'll have to be. I guess it's all just a matter of thickening the skin.
