Semi-colon quiz

I must have missed the English lesson at school where they taught us about the correct use of a semi-colon because I really don't have a clue when to use them. As a result I never use them (yes I know, shocking, but I'm from the generation that didn't really get taught grammar at school. We were told 'creativity' was more important). Hmmm. Not sure what Lynne Truss would think of that philosophy!

Anyway, here's a quiz on semi-colon usage. I got the first few questions wrong but started to catch on by question 5 (I'm quick like that ;o))

How did you get on?

Well if you can use them in a winking smilie you are not doing too badly :)

Seriously - I love me a well-used semi-colon. I went to a school who actually taught grammar in the early 1980s - how rare! I am so glad I did though. I don't think they taught semi-colons but I picked that up from reading I guess. Made a couple of little mistakes on that quiz but generally did well.

Will be going back to do more quizzes later! Thanks for the link.

Anyway, hi, I'm B, and I've just joined the waiting list for novel racers so I'm popping round saying hi to people! Nice to meet you :)

I strongly dislike the semi-colon. It is a nightmare to teach and other grammatical items can fulfill the same role with more grace.

*walks off grumbling*

Very useful, Calistro. A bit like you, I caught on after a few questions and got (almost) all of the rest right. I'll definitely apply my new-found knowledge in my writing, so thanks!

That was so useful. I didn't do as well as I had thought I might but it's certainly reminded me when a semi-colon should be used.

Thanks and hope you have an enjoyable long weekend.

I love semi-colon's! No sentence is complete without one!

I daren't say how I did! Not good. Not good at all!

I did OK on the quiz, but must admit to being a bit of a dash (-) addict. I'm trying to wean myself off them, as they don't really form any part of grammar and often a semi-colon will do just as well and look better (apart from in the word semi-colon of course!)

I like semi-colons but, like all punctuation marks, I think you can overkill!!!!!!!!

helenmh - surely that sentence should have been...
'I love semi-colons; no sentence is complete without one!'

Sorry, I couldn't resist....!

Oh, that was fun. I like semi-colons, though not so much in my novel, not since I realized it looked like someone had thrown pepper all over it. Perhaps moderation is the key.

I'm going to keep a dignified silence on this matter. ;)
