The golden ticket has arrived!

That's what my agent wrote on a comp slip when she forwarded me an envelope with my name on it. It was stamped with the name of my publishers and inside I found...

...a ticket to the 2009 Author Party!

It's so fancy I let out a little squeal of excitement when I opened it. It's thick card, A5 size, gold around the edges, embossed with the publisher's name in silver and the type in swirly black (and my name written in pen in the top left hand corner) and it says the date (mid Feb) and the venue (I'll reveal all when I've been) and...

6.30-8.30pm Champagne

Two hours of champagne?!

TWO HOURS

Oh my god. I just KNOW I'm going to drink too much and talk crap...or fall over...or make a fool of myself...or tell people my book is rubbish...or cry...

Actually I'll probably just find a nice corner to hide in and then gawp at all the famous author types swanning around (whilst feeling like a bit of a fraud).

Can you tell my head's spinning with excitement (and nerves)?

It's me again. I came (originally ... before my first comment) looking for a link you had a while back... about physical reactions to show emotion... but I can't find it. Do you know what Im talking about?

That sounds fabulous! I bet you'll get some good stories out of that champagne hour(s).

What are you going to do until Feb?

Wow that sounds so exciting. I bet you won't get a chance to hide a corner though and people will want to speak to the fabulous new author they have been hearing about!

Oh whoop, whoop! Look, just enjoy every moment - no one's every laid two hours of champagne on just for me! Lovely news.

JJ - Are you talking about the body language link? It's here:

Angie - I do hope so!

The Dotterel - Try and lose weight so I can get into my Little Black Dress! ;o)

Sarah*G* - Instead of writing books I think I need to buy a How to Mingle book!

Chris H - I'm sure I will :o)

Damn and I was just going to ask what you were wearing....

LBD, champagne (high heels?) and author party, wow, what could be better. Can't wait for all of the details!!

Leigh said...

Two hours, with champagne on hand?
Sounds very tedious, Calistro.
But I'd be more than happy to take your place; I'm sure I must owe you a favour.

Sounds utterly fab. Jealous moi?

Bernadette said...

Wow, Cally that's marvellous. And don't worry - remember how nervous you were about your publishers' meeting? You'll have a fabby time and I can't wait to hear all about it.

maybe I should go with you so I can hold you up.

Let me get my coat.

Paige said...

Oh! How exciting! You must tell us everything that happens and who you see/meet! I would be in complete awe going to a do like that! You are going to have the BEST time! :D

Tam - Glad it's not just me! Must remember to eat something before I go!

L-Plate - As an amazonian woman (!) I don't really do heels. Well..maybe a teeny tiny heel but no tottering for me!

Leigh - Hee! Yes, that's the kind of favour you want to owe isn't it!

Debs - You'll get to experience it one day I'm sure. And I can tell you what NOT to do at an author party when I report back!

Bernadette - You're absolutely right. I'm sure I'll be fine...after the first glass of champagne ;o)

Vodka - Ha! Hope you're strong!

Paige - I will do, even if I have to use pseudonyms for some of the famous people. We all know how much they like googling themselves (I'm talking about YOU Keith Chegwin! ;o))

Fionnuala - Where I go you (and all the others) will go too. I'm sure of it, it's just a matter of time!

Wow! Cal - what you need is someone to go with you to tell you when you've drunk enough champagne and then hold you up for the rest of the evening and call a taxi for you at the end.

So - I'm free in mid-February?!

Leon Basin said...

Hey, how is it going fellow writer?

Calistro said...

Womag - unfortunately it says 'admits one' in the bottom right hand corner in small print. Honestly. Otherwise you'd definitely be my first choice to prop me up - you and the rest of the girls (and boys). I'd sneak you all in! ;o)

Leon - Hello!

How To Mingle With Writers: (a) use standard opening gambit 'What are you working on at the moment?' (b) listen more than you talk, because writers are solitary creatures who don't get out much and are generally pleased to find an interested audience. It's strange but true that the more you listen to other people, the more entertaining they think you are. With a little practice, it's also possible to look attentive while being really quite drunk. (So I'm told.) I bet you'll have a wonderful time.

liz fenwick said...

Zinnia - that is of course if they have drunk as much as you have - which of course they will:-)

Melissa Marsh said...

I would feel the same way - wanting to sit in the corner and just watch people, wondering if they'd given me the invite by mistake!

But I bet you'll have a great time. :-)

JJ said...

Yup, that was the one. Thanks Cally. Jjx
